EFFECT OF ACUTE STATIC STRETCH EXERCISES ON ISOKINETIC PEAK TORQUE AT LOAD RANGE AND ISOMETRIC KNEE EXTENSION-FLEXION STRENGTH

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of acute static stretch on knee isokinetic extension-flexion peak torque at the load range and isometric strength. 14 healthy men (20,4±1,2 year, 70,1±2,7 kg, 176,4±3,6 cm) participated in the study voluntarily. After warming up, subjects were tested for isokinetic concentric (210⁰/ sec, 60⁰ /sec respectively) and isometric knee extensionflexion by isokinetic dynamometer (Cybex NORM Computerized Sports Medicine Inc. USA). After strength measurements, subjects stretched quadriceps and hamstring muscle groups for 3x30 sec, respectively. In the end, strength measurements were repeated using the same procedure. The results are presented ±SEM and the strength values before and after stretch were analysed by paired t test. Peak torque values at 210⁰/sec ve 60⁰/sec during knee extension-flexion at isokinetic load range decreased after stretch exercise (p<0.05). Also, maximal isometric knee extension flexion strength decreased significantly after stretch exercise (p<0.05). Findings suggest that static stretch caused decrease of the isokinetic and isometric muscle strength. This should be taken into consideration when measuring performance and implementing physical therapy exercises
