Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of static and dynamic muscle contraction on acute auditory and simple visual reaction time in athletes. A pre-test and post-test model was used.
Method: The study sample consisted of 40 students of the School of Physical Education and Sports of Ordu University. All participants were active male athletes. Participation was voluntary. Using simple random sampling, participants were assigned into two groups: dynamic exercise (n = 20, 20.85 years) and static exercise (n = 20, 21.55 years). Simple auditory and visual reaction tests were applied to both groups. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) at a significance level of 0.05. Descriptive statistics, Shapiro Wilk normality test, Wilcoxon ordered signs test and Kruskal Wallis test were used for analysis.
Results: Kruskal Wallis test results showed that there was a statistically significant difference in visual dominant posttest (p = 0.02) and auditory dominant posttest (p = 0.03) values between the dynamic and static exercise groups (P˂0.05). However, there was no statistically significant difference in visual dominant pretest (p = 0.81), visual non-dominant pretest (p = 0.25), visual non-dominant posttest (p = 0.52) auditory dominant pretest (p = 0.49) auditory non-dominant pretest (p = 0.66) auditory non-dominant final test (p = 0.07), values (P˃0.05).
Conclusion: Fatigue due to static and dynamic exercises has no effect on acute auditory and simple visual reaction time in athletes. The non-dominant arm auditory reaction is better than the visual reaction, and the dominant arm reaction after fatigue is better than the non-dominant arm reaction.
