The Role of Inner Speech in Modulating Electrophysiological Stress Responses
Öz
The frequency and reliance on inner speech (IS) vary across individuals and may influence self-regulation processes such as emotion regulation and impulse control. This study examined whether IS frequency is associated with differences in emotion regulation, impulsive behavior, and physiological stress responses. The sample consisted of 35 university students aged 18–39 who completed self-report measures and were categorized into high and low IS groups based on the Varieties of Inner Speech Questionnaire (VISQ-R). Emotion regulation (ERQ), impulsive behavior (UPPS), and cognitive status (MMSE) were also assessed. Stress was induced through Stroop and mental arithmetic tasks, and physiological responses, skin conductance level (SCL) and heart rate (HR), were recorded during baseline and task phases using the BIOPAC® MP36 system.
It was hypothesized that IS frequency would differentiate self-report measures as well as HR and SCL responses, reflecting variations in autonomic nervous system activity. Between-group comparisons were conducted using independent samples t-tests, and within-group changes were assessed using repeated-measures ANOVA. Results showed no significant group differences in emotion regulation or impulsivity. Although SCL and HR increased significantly during the task phases, indicating successful stress induction, no IS-related differences were found in physiological responses, reaction times, or accuracy on Stroop tasks. These findings suggest that while the stress manipulation was effective, IS frequency did not substantially affect cognitive or physiological outcomes. Future research should consider larger sample sizes and counterbalancing task order.
