AI-ASSISTED COMPILATION OF A TURKISH DICTIONARY: DREAM OR REALITY?

Yıl 2024, Cilt: 9 Sayı: 2, 1 - 12, 24.12.2025

Öz

This article brings to the fore the possibilities and limits of AI-assisted compilation of a Turkish dictionary, considering both historical background and current practice. While maintaining a cautious stance on human-specific dimensions—such as affect, consciousness, and intention—the paper observes that the capabilities of large language models (LLMs) in text generation and analysis have brought lexicography to a new threshold in terms of speed and coverage. It argues that a fully automated, human-free dictionary is not realistic under present conditions, and instead proposes a human-in-the-loop, criteria-explicit hybrid workflow. In this approach, AI provides decision support on a documented corpus—for candidate headword extraction, word-sense distinction, and drafting of definitions and examples—while final judgments rest with expert lexicographers and editors. The process requires explicit justification of sources and selections, systematic user feedback, and a public trace through versioning and changelogs, so that the product becomes not merely a “final text” but a living, auditable lexical resource. Without delving into technical detail, the article balances expected benefits—accelerated work, broader coverage, earlier detection of neologisms and novel uses—against risks concerning data licensing, privacy, bias and representativeness, and inconsistencies in automated outputs. The final section underscores principles for publication and versioning, including transparency, persistent identifiers, and preservation of prior releases. In conclusion, a fully automatic dictionary remains a dream for now; by contrast, a supervised, corpus- and dataset-based, criteria-explicit, versionable architecture is a realistic, feasible, and sustainable roadmap. A further aim is to encourage early-career scholars in Turkish language studies to engage with AI and Natural Language Processing (NLP).
