Objective: The aim of this study was first to determine traumatic experiences and dyadic adjustment in patients with Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG). The second aim of the study was to examine the relationship between the patients' personality traits and attachment styles. Material and Method: Patients diagnosed with HG who presented to the gynecology and obstetrics outpatient clinic were informed about the study. Those who agreed to participate completed a demographic and clinical evaluation form. Then, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Eysenk Personality Inventory-revised short form (EPS), Relationship Scales Questionnaire (RSQQ), Life Events Checklist (LICC) were applied.
Results: 140 people were included in our study (70 HG, and 70 healthy pregnant). No statistically significant difference was found between the demographic data of both groups (p>0.005). Depression Scale scores were calculated higher in the patient group than in the controls (p<0.001). Although the Anxiety Scale scores were higher in the HG group than in the controls, they did not show any statistically significant difference. No significant difference was found between the groups in the other scales applied to the groups.
Conclusion: We investigated some psychiatric features in HG cases that make life very difficult during pregnancy. We found that the depression level of the patient group was higher than the control group. Hyperemesis is a disease that both challenges the pregnant woman and causes discomfort in every area. It is thought that supporting the patients mentally in this area may contribute to their recovery process.
