Midwives’ Experiences in Providing Care to Women with Physical Disabilities During Labour: A Qualitative Study

Öz

Objective: This study aims to explore the experiences, challenges, and adaptive strategies of midwives caring for women with physical disabilities during labour and delivery. Method: Employing a qualitative phenomenological design, 12 midwives from three state hospitals in southern Turkey, each having provided care to at least one physically disabled woman, were purposefully and snowball sampled. Data were collected from January to April 2025 via semi structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis with support from MAXQDA 2022 software. Results: The analysis revealed that the experiences of midwives were grouped under seven main themes: (1) communication and emotional support, (2) individualized and creative care strategies, (3) lack of education, knowledge, and experience, (4) physical and systemic challenges, (5) multidisciplinary teamwork and collaboration, (6) changing experiences according to the stages of labour, and (7) physical and emotional fatigue. Participants particularly reported that trust-based communication, non-pharmacological pain management, intra-team coordination, and infrastructural adaptations were important components that could facilitate women’s sense of safety, participation in care, and fulfillment of support needs. Conclusion: Care for women with physical disabilities during childbirth requires not only technical competencies but also systemic adjustments, inclusive protocols, and strengthened emotional resilience. Recommendations include developing national guidelines for disability inclusive maternity care, expanding in service training, and improving accessibility infrastructure in healthcare settings.
