The Cold Miracle: Assessing Nurses' and Midwives' Level of Knowledge of Therapeutic Hypothermia in Newborn Infants

Öz

Objective: This study aimed to determine the knowledge levels of nurses and midwives regarding the care and follow-up of newborn infants undergoing therapeutic hypothermia. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted in the level IV neonatal intensive care unit of a training and research hospital in Istanbul. The study group consisted of 50 nurses and midwives working in this unit. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using the "Demographic Data Form" and the "Therapeutic Hypothermia Knowledge Test". Results: Of the participants, 54.0% were between 18 and 29 years of age, 92.0% were female, and 66.0% held a bachelor’s degree. The mean score of the Therapeutic Hypothermia Knowledge Test was 71.06±11.57 out of 100. Correct response rates varied widely across items; the highest rate was for cold pack application (100.0%), and the lowest for the duration of the induction phase (20.0%). Knowledge scores were significantly higher among participants aged 30 years and over (p=0.027) and among those holding NICU nursing certification (p=0.042). In contrast, no significant differences were found by education level, professional experience, or years of NICU experience (p>0.05). Conclusion: The knowledge levels of nurses and midwives regarding therapeutic hypothermia were moderate to high. Knowledge was associated with certification and age rather than with years spent in the unit or academic degree, indicating that structured, continuous training programs may be needed.
