Examining the Relationship Between Body Mass Index and Hemoglobin A1c Levels and Nutrition in Adult Individuals

Öz

Aim: Epidemiological studies have shown that increasing Body Mass Index (BMI) increases the risk of diabetes, and there is a strong relationship between Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and BMI. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between BMI levels, HbA1c values, and nutrition among adult individuals.
Method: 140 individuals registered in a Family Health Center in Alanya and whose HbA1c levels measured between February 2017-2018 are included in the study. Anthropometric measurements and biochemical analysis results of individuals were taken from the records retrospectively.
Results: Average BMI levels of individuals with an average age of 46.8±14.6 years are 28.7±4.9 kg / m2, fasting glucose values 95.8 ± 39.0 mg / dl, and HbA1c values 5.8±1.2%. Individuals with a HbA1c value of 6.5% and above were found to be higher in BMI than the individuals with a mean HbA1c below 6.5% (p = 0.04). A positive and low-level relationship was found between the BMI and HbA1c (r=0,230, p<0,01) levels, fasting glucose (r=0,350, p<0,01), energy (r=0,230, p<0,01) and carbohydrate (r=0,220, p<0,01) consumption of the individuals.
Conclusion: Among the actual major public health problems, obesity and diabetes are nutrition-related chronic diseases. The results of this research reveal the importance of BMI and HbA1c measurements in primary health care institutions to improve public health and reduce the prevalence of chronic diseases.

Yetişkin Bireylerde Beden Kütle İndeksi ve Hemoglobin A1c Düzeyleri ile Beslenme Arasındaki İlişkinin İncelenmesi

Öz

Amaç: Epidemiyolojik çalışmalar Beden Kütle İndeksi (BKİ) düzeyinin artmasının diyabet riskini arttırdığını, Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) ve BKİ arasında güçlü bir ilişki olduğunu göstermiştir. Bu araştırma ile yetişkin bireylerin BKİ düzeyleri ile HbA1c değerleri ve beslenme arasındaki ilişkinin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır.
Yöntem: Alanya’da bir Aile Sağlığı Merkezi’ne kayıtlı olan ve Şubat 2017-2018 tarihleri arasında HbA1c ölçümü yapılmış 140 birey araştırma kapsamına alınmıştır. Retrospektif olarak bireylerin antropometrik ölçümleri ve biyokimyasal analiz sonuçları kayıtlardan alınmıştır. Besin tüketimlerine ilişkin bilgiler bireylerle yüz yüze görüşme tekniği kullanılarak gönüllülük esasına göre elde edilmiştir.
Bulgular: Yaş ortalaması 46,8±14,6 yıl olan bireylerin ortalama BKİ düzeyleri 28,7±4,9 kg/m2, açlık glikoz değerleri 95,8±39,0 mg/dl, HbA1c değerleri %5,8±1,2’dir. HbA1c değeri %6,5 ve üstünde olan bireylerin BKİ ortalaması, %6,5 altında olan bireylerin BKİ ortalamasına göre yüksek bulunmuştur (p=0,04). Bireylerin BKİ düzeyleri ile HbA1c (r=0,230, p<0,01), açlık glikoz (r=0,350, p<0,01), enerji (r=0,230, p<0,01) ve karbonhidrat (r=0,220, p<0,01) tüketimleri arasında pozitif yönde ve düşük düzeyde anlamlı bir ilişki olduğu saptanmıştır.
Sonuç: Günümüzde halk sağlığı sorunlarının başında yer alan obezite ve diyabet beslenme ile ilişkili önemli kronik hastalıklardır. Bu araştırmanın sonuçları toplum sağlığının geliştirilmesi ve kronik hastalıkların prevalansının düşürülmesi için birinci basamak sağlık kuruluşlarında BKI ve HbA1c ölçümlerinin önemini ortaya çıkarmaktadır.
