Childhood-Period Development and Religious Education*

Abstract

This research has been performed with the intention of analyzing how children’s religious feelings and thoughts undergo a change from the first and third periods of childhood. The research has been configured in the qualitative research model. A total of 71 children between the ages of 4-11 studying in one kindergarten and four primary schools connected to the Ministry of National Education in the Kula district of Manisa Province in April of 2017 form the study group of the research. A focus-group meeting has been conducted for the purpose of determining the scope and limitations of the research and forming a projection of the questions the children will be asked. The semistructured interview questions, obtained as a result of the focus-group meeting, were asked in quiet environments like the schools’ library, an empty class, or guidance room in compliance with the principal of confidentiality. Data obtained following the in-depth interview technique have been recorded using a digital voice recorder. First and last names were not used while evaluating the data obtained from the interviews; the archiving procedure of giving each child a sequential number in the form of Child 1, Child 2, and so on has been followed. The data obtained at the end of the interviews have been interpreted through decoding, and the obtained results have been compared with some studies performed in Turkey and in the West. A group of similarities and differences were determined to have been found on the topics of belief in Allah, the idea of the Afterlife, the concept of prophets, unseen beings, worship, and prayer, which we have subjected to research as a result of the performed evaluations.
