Öz

Arms manufacturing was one of the areas along side with various other industrial fields the United States of America began to emerge as a leading power in the middle of the nineteenth century. In this respect the US system of production began to be imitated both in the Europe and England due to the new techniques of manufacturing, design of the rifles, and particularly their being interchangeable. Undertaking a comprehensive military change and re-organization like the case in Russia and Egypt then, the Ottoman government also wanted to benefit from the American arms industry. This article deals with the first phase of the technology transfer between the Ottoman Empire and United States of America during the 1860s for a second time, the formal relations of the two countries began in 1830 when the transfer of technology played the sole role, albeit short, that brought the two counties closer

Teknolojik gelişmeler ışığında Osmanlı-Amerikan silah ticaretinin ilk dönemi

Öz

19. yüzyılın ortalarında, çeşitli alanlarda önemli atılımlar yapan Amerika Birleşik Devletleri’nin ön plana çıkmaya başladığı sanayi dallarından birisi de silah üretimi olmuştur. Getirdiği yeni üretim teknikleri, tüfeklerin dizaynı ve özellikle interchangable özelliği neticesinde Amerikan üretim modeli bu konuda kısa süre içinde Avrupa ve İngiltere’de taklit edilmeye başlanmıştı. Bu dönemde Rusya ve Mısır’da olduğu gibi bir askeri yenileşme ve organizasyon gerçekleştiren Osmanlı Devleti adı geçen iki devlet gibi Amerikan silah sanayisinden yararlanmak istemiştir. Bu çalışma resmi ilişkileri 1830’da başlayan iki ülkenin bu sırada kısa süreli de olsa yakınlaşmalarına gerekçe olan teknoloji transferinin ikinci defa 1860’lı yıllarda tekrar etkili olması ile gelişen sürecin ilk dönemini ele almaktadır
