The Maiandros River and Its Interpretation as Mentioned in Pseudo-Plutarch's On Rivers

Abstract: The view of humanity
has flourished around fresh water sources because of their needs for water, and
the culture and civilization have emerged in river basins is a clear-cut
generalization. In this context, sometimes a great importance and sometimes
sacredness have been attributed to the rivers by many authors in their works.
Ancient writers often mention this topic and deal with the rivers in their
works. As in line with it, Pseudo-Plutarch also, in his book On Rivers, mainly
deals with the rivers and tries to give some information about the rivers to
the reader. One of the rivers that Pseudo-Plutarch examines is the Maiandros
(the Great Menderes River). The Maiandros its source from Kelainai in Phrygia
region in antiquity, flowed through the mentioned region and then irrigated the
lands of Lydia, Caria and Ionia regions and poured into Aigaios Pontos (Aegean
Sea). During that time, it was the biggest river of ancient Asia (Asia Minor)
with its length and abundance of waters. It shaped the geographies which passed
through and gave life to those regions with lots opportunities. The zigzag flow
of the stream of the Maiandros River was extremely interesting for the ancient
writers naming it with lots of different names and different imaginations in
the mind of the ancient people. Every river that zigzags or anything that
zigzags was known by its name. Even a decoration motif based on the flow of the
river was created and identified with the name of the river. In this study,
after a brief evaluation of Pseudo-Plutarch’s work, we have dealt the origin of
the name of the river, its flow route, benefits it provided to the regions
through which it flowed, the damages it caused and the effects from antiquity
to the present day as in line with the narratives of the author.
Pseudo-Plutarch's narratives about the Maiandros River have been examined from
the perspective of the ancient writers, archaeological materials, epigraphic
documents and numismatic finds.

Pseudo-Plutarkhos’un Nehirler Üzerine Adlı Eserine Göre Maiandros Nehri ve Yorumlanması

Öz

İnsanların suya olan gereksinimlerinden dolayı insanlığın tatlı su kaynakları etrafında yeşermiş olduğu, kültür ve medeniyetin akarsu havzalarında ortaya çıktığı görüşü belirgin bir genellemedir. Bu bağlamda akarsulara çağlar boyu büyük bir önem bazen de kutsiyet atfedilmiştir. Antikçağ yazarları da bu konuya sıkça değinmişler ve akarsuları eserlerine konu etmişlerdir. Pseudo-Plutarkhos da Nehirler Üzerine adlı eserinde ağırlıklı olarak nehirleri konu edinmiş ve nehirler hakkında okuyucuya bazı bilgiler vermeye çalışmıştır. Pseudo-Plutarkhos’un konu edindiği nehirlerden biri de Maiandros (Büyük Menderes Nehri)’tur. Antikçağda Phrygia Bölgesi’ndeki Kelainai yakınlarından kaynağını almış olan Maiandros sözü edilen bölge boyunca akmış daha sonra Lydia, Karia ve Ionia bölgelerinin arazilerini sulayarak Aigaios Pontos’a (Ege Denizi) dökülmüştür. Uzunluğu ve taşıdığı suların bolluğuyla antikçağ Asia’sının (Küçük Asya) en büyük nehri olarak görülmüş, içinden geçtiği coğrafyaları şekillendirmiş ve sağladığı imkanlarla o bölgelere hayat vermiştir. Maiandros Nehri’nin akıntısının zikzaklı olması son derece ilgi çekici olmuş, antikçağ yazarlarının nehre faklı anlamlar yüklemesine ve antikçağ insanının zihninde farklı imgelemler oluşmasına neden olmuştur. Zikzaklar çizen her nehir ya da zikzaklı olan her şey onun adıyla anılmaya başlamıştır. Nehrin akış şeklini esas alan bir bezeme motifi dahi oluşturulmuş ve nehrin adıyla özdeşleştirilmiştir. Bu çalışmada Pseudo-Plutarkhos’un sözü edilen eseri hakkında kısa bir değerlendirme yapıldıktan sonra yazarın anlatılarına istinaden, nehrin isminin kökeninden, akış rotasına, aktığı güzergahtaki yörelere sağladığı yarardan neden olduğu zararlara ve antikçağdan günümüze ulaşan etkilerine değinilmiştir. Pseudo-Plutarkhos’un Maiandros Nehri’yle ilintili anlatıları, antikçağ yazarları, arkeolojik materyaller, epigrafik belgeler ve numismatik buluntular ışığında değerlendirilmeye çalışılmıştır.
