The Views of Academics Working in Physical Education and Sports Teaching Departments on Teaching Approaches

This study was conducted to determine the teaching approaches used in the education process according
to the perceptions of academics serving in physical education and sports teaching. The data of the study
were obtained via a semi-structured interview form prepared by the researchers. The interview form
included five items and a licensed QSR NVIVO 10 software was used in the data analysis. The academics
stated that they most frequently prepared for the lessons by conducting resource research and literature
reviews while they applied the question-answer method to ensure the participation of the students in the
lessons and attract their attention during lessons in addition to expecting the students to be active during
the lessons. Furthermore, the academics stated that they most frequently preferred teacher-centered
methods and adopted traditional assessment and evaluation methods the most. Accordingly, it was
determined that the academics mostly adopted the teacher-centered methods. However, the academics
in the study did not use the methods and techniques that fit only one approach during the education
periods; instead, it was determined that they taught with both teacher-centered and student-centered
approaches depending on the duration of the course and the situation. It is suggested that the academics
who work in these departments should conduct education processes that are more suitable for studentcentered approaches
