ON THE NAME AND ORIGIN OF THE NOGHAY PEOPLE

Abstract

Noghays are a Kipchak Turkic tribe living in the North Caucasus. Some researchers state that the Noghays are formed by several Turkic tribes as Uz and Pecheneg, Kipchak-Uzbek tribes. According to another opinion, the ruling tribe of the Noghay Horde represented Turkified Mongol Manghits. Thus, according to this opinion Noghay people represent Turkified Manghits. The steppe population forming the political structure of the first Noghay Horde may have been referred to as Noghay within the Manghit clans. Noghays were named after the name of a Golden Horde prince, Noghay Khan. It is not precisely known whether the word ‘Noghay’ comes from Mongolian. There are several opinions concerning the meanings of the word. Moreover, it is seen that Noghays are given different names according to the geographical place they inhabit.

NOGAY ADI VE NOGAYLARIN KÖKENİ ÜZERİNE

Öz

Kuzey Kafkasya’da yaşayan Nogay Türkleri Kıpçak grubuna bağlı bir Türk topluluğudur. Bazı araştırmacılar Nogayların Uz ve Peçenek, Kıpçak-Özbek kitlesi vb. çeşitli Türk boylarından türediğini belirtmektedir. Bir görüşe göre de Nogay Orda olarak adlandırılan hanlıkta, hakim boy topluluğu Türkleşmiş Moğol Mangıt veya Mangıtlardır (Moğ. Mangġud). Buna göre bu Türkleşmiş Mangıtlar, Nogaylardır. İlk Nogay Ordası’nın siyasî yapısını teşkil eden bozkırdaki nüfus, Mangıt soyu içinde Nogay adı ile anılmış da olabilir. Nogay Türkleri adlarını bir Altın Ordu şehzadesi olan Nogay Han’dan almışlardır. Nogay kelimesinin Moğolca olup olmadığı ve kelimenin anlamları üzerine de farklı görüşler bulunmaktadır. Ayrıca Nogayların bulundukları coğrafyaya göre farklı adlarla da anıldığı görülmektedir.
