Data-Driven Analysis of the Turkish-Speaking Community’s Contribution to Austria’s Tourism Economy
Öz
Purpose: This study investigates the economic, social, and behavioral contributions of Turkish-speaking communities to Austria’s tourism sector, which contributes nearly 14% to national GDP and is shaped by multicultural dynamics and migrant entrepreneurship. It focuses on their role as both consumers and suppliers within the tourism ecosystem. Method: The study adopts a data-driven framework integrating machine learning models (LSTM, Random Forests, XGBoost), natural language processing (NLP), clustering techniques, and input–output modeling. It analyzes official statistics, business registries, and 2,000 Turkish-language online reviews to quantify diaspora-linked travel flows, entrepreneurial activity, and labor participation. Findings: Turkish-speaking communities contribute approximately €700–1,000 million annually to Austria’s tourism GDP and support around 12,000–15,000 jobs, mainly in gastronomy, hospitality, and transport sectors. Machine learning forecasts reveal a dual seasonality pattern, with summer peaks driven by diaspora family visits and winter peaks associated with leisure tourism. Additionally, diaspora-related demand demonstrates 20–30% lower volatility during crisis periods. NLP analysis indicates high tourist satisfaction but also identifies gaps in culturally tailored services, particularly in halal food availability and Turkish-language accessibility. Clustering results distinguish three main tourist segments—Diaspora Visitors, Leisure Tourists, and Community Travelers—each with distinct motivations and spending behaviors. Conclusion: Turkish-speaking communities play a strategic role in fostering an inclusive, resilient, and culturally sensitive tourism ecosystem in Austria. By leveraging computational methods, this study provides actionable insights for policymakers and businesses to better understand diaspora contributions and develop targeted strategies that enhance service provision and strengthen Austria’s tourism competitiveness.
