Enhancing the Value of National Gardens on the International Level: A Model Suggestion
Öz
Objective: National Gardens have become increasingly widespread in Türkiye in recent years and offer significant potential in meeting the growing demand for open and green spaces. This study aims to develop a model that may contribute to enhancing the national and international value of National Gardens in Türkiye, drawing on the example of the Royal Parks in England. Method: A qualitative research approach was adopted, employing document analysis as a primary data collection method and limited field observations as a complementary data collection method. The collected data were analysed using content analysis. Findings: Based on the findings, a holistic model consisting of five interrelated dimensions was developed for National Gardens: (a) management and institutional structure, (b) quality and control standards, (c) sustainability and maintenance, (d) multifunctional use and recreation opportunities, and (e) monitoring, evaluation, and dissemination. The proposed model emphasizes the diversification of recreational activities, the integration of local gastronomic elements into the park experience, and the strengthening of sustainable and participatory management mechanisms. Discussion: National Gardens respond to the growing demand for urban green spaces and possess the potential to evolve into urban recreation destinations. For this reason, appropriate planning and management approaches are needed to be developed on a large scale. Overall, this study provides both a conceptual and practical framework for transforming National Gardens into sustainable, multifunctional, and competitive recreation destinations, contributing to the literature on urban park management and tourism planning.
