The Concept of "Tradition" and Turkish Intellectuals from the Perspective of Doğan Özlem's Hermeneutics Approach

Abstract

It can be said that some Turkish intellectuals who advocate conservative ideology attach largely positive meanings to the concept of "tradition" in the country's intellectual environment. On the other hand, it is seen that some Turkish intellectuals who find themselves close to the social democratic worldview associate the concept in question with the status quo. The concept of "tradition" is one of the concepts at the center of the tension between "modern" and "conservative" in the process of Turkish modernization that accelerated with the Tanzimat period. It is seen that Doğan Özlem, one of the philosophers who discusses this concept in the context of the "modern" and "conservative" tension, addresses various social and political problems of the social unity into which he was born from the perspective of the hermeneutic method. Özlem, who was influenced by the German philosopher Wilhem Dilthey, who emphasized that hermeneutics is the method of the human sciences, made his career in philosophy within a tradition based on nominalist, singularist and relativist epistemology. However, being nominalist, singularist and relativist is more than a matter of philosophical preference for Özlem. The nominalist, singularist and relativist approach is also a choice of the thinker. It can be said that Özlem made this choice by trying to evaluate his background, social situation and the place of his society in the world conjuncture. In this study, the concept of "tradition" and its memory, which have caused debates among various segments of society in the Republic of Turkey, the centennial of which we have left behind, are discussed.

Doğan Özlem’in Tekilci, Tarihselci ve Yorumlamacı Yaklaşımı Perspektifinden “Gelenek” Kavramı ve Aydınlarımız

Öz

Düşünce yaşamımızda “gelenek” kavramına muhafazakâr ideolojiyi savunan aydınlarımızın büyük ölçüde olumlu anlamlar yükledikleri söylenebilir. Öte yandan kendisini sol, sosyal demokrat dünya görüşüne yakın bulan kimi düşün insanımızın söz konusu kavramı daha çok statükoculukla ilişkilendirdikleri görülür. “Gelenek” kavramı Tanzimat dönemiyle birlikte ivmelenen Türk modernleşmesi sürecinde modern-muhafazakâr geriliminin merkezinde yer alan kavramlardan biridir. Söz konusu kavramı “modern”, “muhafazakâr” gerilimi bağlamında tartışan felsefecilerimizden biri olan Doğan Özlem’in içine doğduğu sosyal birliğin çeşitli toplumsal ve siyasal problemlerini Hermeneutik yaklaşım perspektifinden ele aldığı görülür. Hermeneutiğin, tin bilimlerinin yöntemi olduğuna dikkat çeken Alman filozof Wilhem Dilthey’den büyük ölçüde etkilenen Özlem, felsefedeki kariyerini de zaten nominalist, tekilci ve rölativist bir epistemolojiye dayanan gelenek içerisinde yapar. Yalnız, nominalist, tekilci ve rölativist olmak, Özlem için felsefi tercih meselesi olmanın ötesinde bir önem taşır. Nominalist, tekilci ve rölativist yaklaşım aynı zamanda düşünürün bir seçimidir. Söz konusu seçimi Özlem’in kendi özgeçmişini, sosyal durumunu ve içinde bulunduğu toplumun dünya konjonktürü içindeki yerini değerlendirmeye çalışarak yapmış olduğu söylenebilir. Bu çalışmada yüzüncü yılını geride bıraktığımız cumhuriyetimizde toplumumuzun çeşitli kesimleri arasında tartışmalara neden olan “gelenek” kavramı ve anılan kavrama ilişkin aydınlarımızın yaklaşımları Doğan Özlem’in tekilci, tarihselci ve yorumlamacı yaklaşımı perspektifinden incelenmektedir.
