An Examination of the Origin of the Concept of Phainomenon in Relation to Heidegger's Understanding of Being
Abstract
The study aims to compare and examine some of the findings regarding Martin Heidegger's interpretation of the concept of phenomenon with the term used in etymology-oriented dictionaries and then evaluate and interpret these examinations. In addition, this study combines the etymological and historical examination of the concept with Heidegger’s ontology within the framework of the relevant purpose. It discusses how he reinterpreted this concept and gained philosophical depth. This discussion aims to try to grasp the process of self-disclosure of being and the philosophical meaning of this process by moving from the linguistic roots of the concept of phenomenon to Heidegger’s ontological approach. The scope of the study will be the comments on the phenomenon under the subtitle of “The Concept of Phenomenon” in the section “Phenomenological Research Method” in the “Second Chapter” of the “Introduction” to Heidegger’s work Being and Time published in 1927. Phenomenon is a fundamental element of Heidegger’s understanding of being, as it is how being itself emerges. Therefore, someone who wants to understand Heidegger’s philosophy in depth needs to think about the concept of phenomenon. Reflecting on phenomenon is also essential to understanding the process of self-disclosure that underlies his concept of being. The method followed in this study, which is of the nature of examination and evaluation, is an analysis based on interpretation, focusing on the relevant text within the scope above. The study consists of two parts and a conclusion. The general plan of the study is the etymological examination of the concept of phenomenon, the analysis of the findings from a philosophical-linguistic perspective, Heidegger’s comments on this concept, the evaluation of these comments, and their subsequent comparison and interpretation. The sources of this study, which uses a text-centered interpretation-based analysis method, are Heidegger’s work mentioned above, using the original and its different translations, as well as dictionaries primarily based on etymology.
