Diagnosis of carotid body tumors by fine needle aspiration cytology (Report of two cases)

Abstract

Aim: Carotid body tumors (CBT) are rare tumors that must be considered in the differential diagnosis of head and neck masses. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is a useful but risky method for providing definitive diagnosis of these tumors. For this reason, FNAC experiences and cytologic findings of CBT are limited in the literature. Case report: First case is 28-year-old male, second case is 67-year-old female. Both patients were admitted to Ear Nose Throat polyclinic with right cervical mass and then referred to our FNA polyclinics . The slides of both patients revealed bloody background and groups, nests or separate tumor cells. Tumor cells had roundoval eccentrically placed nuclei and a moderate amount of finely granulated cytoplasm. First case was confirmed both histopathologically or radiologically, second case was only confirmed radiologically. Conclusion: We presented cytologic findings in two cases of CBT and discussed the differential diagnosis in the light of the pertinent literature

Karotis cisim tümörlerinin ince iğne aspirasyon sitolojisi ile tanısı (İki olgu sunumu)

Öz

Amaç: Karotis cisim tümörleri (KCT) baş- boyun bölgesinin az görünen fakat ayırıcı tanıda düşünülmesi gereken tümörleridir. İnce iğne aspirasyon sitolojisi (İİAS) bu tümörlerin kesin tanısını elde etmek için yararlı ancak riskli olabilecek bir yöntemdir. Bu nedenle, kaynaklarda KCT’nin İİAS ile ilgili deneyimler ve bulgular sınırlıdır. Olgu sunumu: İlk olgu 28 yaşında erkek, ikinci olgu 67 yaşında kadın hastadır. Her iki olgu da sağ boyun bölgesinde şişlik yakınması ile Kulak Burun Boğaz (KBB) polikliniğine başvurmuş ve İİA istemi ile polikliniğimize yönlendirilmişlerdir. Her iki hastanin da sağ servikal bölgesindeki kitleden yapilan İİA’na ait preperatlarda yoğun kanlı zeminde, adalar, kümeler biçiminde ya da ayrı ayrı düşmüş yuvarlak- oval, eksantrik yerleşimli çekirdeğe ve orta büyüklükte, ince granüler sitoplazmaya sahip tümör hücreleri görülmüştür. Sonuç: İlk olgu hem histopatolojik hem de radyolojik olarak, ikinci olgu ise yalnızca radyolojik olarak konfirme edilebilmiştir. Çalışmamızda KCT’ne ait sitolojik bulgular ve ayırıcı tanıları kaynak bilgileri ile birlikte tartışılmıştır
