Gemstones of the the Caria Region (Muğla) in the Antient Period

Öz

The aim of this study is to compare the gemstone products (gemstones and gemstone jewelry) used by the Carian Civilization, which continued its reign from 1100 BC to 545 BC, with the gemstones obtained from the Carian region and to investigate the archaeological and comprehensive reason for the use of jewelry. In order to investigate which present-day gemstone types in the Carian region were used in ancient times, the gemstones on various pieces of jewelry in the Milas Archaeology Museum and the Bodrum Underwater Archaeology Museum, where artifacts excavated from the Carian region are preserved, were examined for the first time not only from an artistic perspective but also from archaeological and scientific perspectives, and they were systematically inventoried. Among the gemstones found in the Bodrum Underwater Archaeology Museum and the Milas Archaeology Museum, which are thought to have been obtained from the Muğla region, only ancient products made of smoky quartz were found. In addition, sardonyx, likely brought from the Lydian region via trade routes, as well as gemstones thought to have originated from the Indian and Yemeni regions, and glass and ceramic materials used as gemstones were also identified.

Antik Dönem Karya Bölgesi (Muğla) Süstaşları / Gemstones of the the Caria Region (Muğla) in the Antient Period

Öz

Çalışmanın amacı, M.Ö. 1.100 yılı itibariyle M.Ö. 545’e kadar hükümdarlığını sürdüren Karya Uygarlığının kullandığı gemolojik ürünlerin (süstaşlarının ve süstaşlı takıların), Karya bölgesinden elde edilen süstaşları ile karşılaştırılması ve arkeo-gemolojik kapsamlı takı kullanımlarını araştırmaktır. Karya bölgesi kazılarından çıkarılan eserlerin korunarak saklandığı Milas Arkeoloji Müzesi ve Bodrum Sualtı Arkeoloji Müzesi’nde bulunan çeşitli takılar üzerindeki süstaşları ilk kez yalnız sanatsal açıdan değil bilimsel olarak ta arkeo-gemolojik açıdan incelenerek envanterlerinin ortaya konması gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bodrum Sualtı Arkeoloji Müzesi ve Milas Müzesi’nde bulunan ve Muğla bölgesinden elde edildiği düşünülen süstaşlarından yalnızca dumanlı kuvarstan üretilmiş antik ürünler bulunmuştur. Bununla birlikte yüksek olasılıkla ticari yollar ile Lidya bölgesinden getirilen sardoniks, ayrıca Hindistan ve Yemen bölgelerinden geldiği düşünülen süstaşları ve cam ile seramik türü süstaşı olarak kullanılan materyaller de tespit edilmiştir.
