Sociodemographic characteristics and cigarette addiction severity of the patients admitted to smoking cessation clinic
Öz
Aim: Tobacco dependence is a complex behavior in which a combination of environmental and genetic factors play a role. Although, Turkey is one of the leading countries in terms of smoking cessation programs, there are few studies in this area. In this study, we aimed to verify the hypothesis that, variables such as gender, educational level, marital status, presence of stressors had an effect on addiction severity.
Material and Methods: Ninety-nine patients admitted to quit smoking clinic executed by Departments of Psychiatry and Thoracic Surgery between January 2012 and January 2013 included in this retrospective study. After surveying the outpatient follow-up forms, the patients were divided into two groups as heavy and non-heavy smokers according to Fagerström test results.
Results: Women ratio and low educational level ratio were higher (P < 0,001 and P = 0,016, respectively), when comparing gender and educational level in terms of dependence severity. The time for starting smoking in patients with a family history of tobacco and alcohol dependence was almost significantly earlier (P = 0,05).
Conclusions: Tobacco dependence is starting in early ages in patients with a family history of tobacco and alcohol dependence and is more severe in women. Further studies are needed to investigate factors affecting tobacco dependence and its severity for a more efficient tobacco control.
