GERMINATION BEHAVIOUR OF ORIENTAL BEECHNUTS (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) AT DIFFERENT TEMPERATURES

Yıl 2010, Cilt: 11 Sayı: 1, 1 - 8, 22.02.2010

Öz

Germination tests were applied at 3 °C, 10 °C (after 12 weeks prechilling), 15 °C, and 20 °C after 8, 10 and 12 weeks prechilling treatments to examine Oriental beechnuts germination behaviour at different temperatures. 12 weeks prechilling duration required for the full dormancy removal of beechnuts. Oriental beechnuts were demonstrated the highest germination percentage in the shortest time at 15 °C after 12 weeks prechilling duration. Germination rate were significantly decreased at 20 °C because of secondary dormancy. Considering the germination rate, the mean germination time, and the germination value, 15 °C appeared to be the most approppriate germination temperature for the prechilled Oriental beechnuts.
