Pre-Marital Health Screening: Assessment of Knowledge and Attitudes of Individuals Applying to Family Health Centers

Öz

Objective: In Türkiye, premarital health certificates are legally mandatory to identify medical or legal risks before marriage. This study evaluated the relationship between individuals’ sociodemographic characteristics and their knowledge and attitudes regarding premarital examinations by focusing on awareness of genetic and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted between January 1 and March 31, 2024, with 361 individuals aged 18–65 who applied to Karabük University Training and Research Hospital Family Medicine Outpatient Clinic or affiliated Family Health Centers. A 46-item questionnaire assessed sociodemographic data, medical history, and knowledge and attitudes related to premarital examinations. Statistical analyses were performed by using IBM SPSS 22.0, with significance set at p<0.05 Results: Of the participants, 57.1% were women and 42.9% men. Higher education level, urban residence, being a civil servant or student, and higher income were associated with significantly better knowledge and more positive attitudes. Positive correlations were found between knowledge and attitude scores (p<0.05). Additionally, 59.0% would delay or cancel marriage due to a sexually transmitted infection, and 52.1% would reconsider marriage upon discovery of a genetic condition Conclusion: Enhanced knowledge of premarital examination is linked with positive attitudes. Educational attainment strongly influences awareness and perceptions. Public education and awareness campaigns are crucial for informed marital decisions and healthier future generations.
