This study aims to examine football fans' perceptions and attitudes towards female referees within the framework of gender roles. In football, where patriarchal structures dominate, female referees are confronted not only with questions regarding their professional competence, but also with gender-based prejudices, marginalization, and systemic barriers. Employing a qualitative design, the research involved semi-structured online interviews with ten diverse participants—each having actively watched football for at least three years and observed female referees—across different ages, genders, and team affiliations. Phenomenological approach and content analysis were utilized in the analysis of interview data. Coding was conducted by two independent experts, ensuring a high level of inter-coder agreement. The findings reveal that initial reactions and attitudes towards female referees are often marked by prejudice and surprise; the responses they receive on the field and in the stands are more intense and gendered compared to their male counterparts. Issues such as lack of trust, challenges in establishing authority, sexist discourse, and discriminatory behaviors were frequently reported, although supportive attitudes and the potential for positive change were also observed. The results indicate that deep-rooted prejudices and cultural norms regarding the representation of female referees and gender perceptions in football persist; however, increasing visibility has the potential to foster greater societal awareness and transformative progress. The study underscores the necessity for educational initiatives, structural reforms, and collective awareness-raising to empower female referees at all levels of sport.
