A Wisdom Scale Adapted to Turkish Language and Culture: Adaptation and Validity-Reliability Study of the POWER Scale

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to adapt the “Perception of Wisdom Exploratory Rating Scale (POWER)” developed by Karami (2020) into Turkish and to examine its validity and reliability in a Turkish sample. Method: The study was conducted with 345 participants, comprising teachers and teacher candidates: the adaptation process involved translation, expert review, a pilot study, and psychometric testing. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were applied. Findings: As a result of the Exploratory Factor Analysis, the original seven-factor structure of the scale was largely preserved. The total variance was calculated as 66.91%. Confirmatory Factor Analysis results (χ²/sd = 1.833, CFI = .942, RMSEA = .049) indicated a good model fit. The Cronbach’s Alpha of the scale was found to be .948. Implications: The results demonstrate that the Turkish version of the POWER scale is a valid and reliable tool for evaluating the multidimensional nature of wisdom in the Turkish language and culture. Originality: This study makes a unique contribution by being the first to adapt the interdisciplinary POWER scale into Turkish and to assess its suitability in a new cultural context.

Türk Dili ve Kültürüne Uyumlu Bir Bilgelik Ölçeği: POWER Ölçeğinin Uyarlanması ve Geçerlik-Güvenirlik Çalışması

Öz

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı Karami (2020) tarafından geliştirilen “Perception of Wisdom Exploratory Rating Scale (POWER)” ölçeğini Türkçeye uyarlamak ve Türk örnekleminde geçerlilik ve güvenilirlik analizlerini yapmaktır. Yöntem: Araştırma, öğretmen ve öğretmen adaylarından oluşan 345 katılımcı ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. Uyarlama süreci çeviri, uzman görüşü, pilot uygulama ve psikometrik testleri içermektedir. Veriler üzerinde Açımlayıcı ve Doğrulayıcı Faktör Analizleri uygulanmıştır. Bulgular: Açımlayıcı Faktör Analizi sonucunda ölçeğin yedi faktörlü özgün yapısı büyük ölçüde korunmuş, toplam varyans %66,91 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Doğrulayıcı Faktör Analizi sonuçları (χ²/sd = 1.833, CFI = .942, RMSEA = .049) modelin iyi uyum gösterdiğini ortaya koymuştur. Ölçeğin Cronbach’s Alpha değeri .948 olarak bulunmuştur. Sonuç: Elde edilen bulgular, POWER ölçeğinin Türkçeye uyarlanmış halinin geçerli ve güvenilir bir ölçme aracı olduğunu ve bilgeliğin çok boyutlu yapısını Türk kültürü ve dili bağlamında değerlendirmeye olanak sunduğunu göstermektedir. Özgünlük: Araştırma, bilgeliği disiplinler arası bir yaklaşımla ele alan POWER ölçeğinin ilk kez Türkçeye uyarlanarak kültürel bağlama uygunluğunu değerlendirmesi bakımından özgün katkı sağlamaktadır.
