Advocacy among Librarians: Thoughts of Librarians in Turkey on Advocacy

Öz

Purpose: This research study examined advocacy literatüre, explored Turkish librarians’ advocacy approaches and perceptions. In addition, librarians’ thoughts on the advocacy skills they need for advocacy, their participation in advocacy efforts, advocacy needs, current advocacy barriers, and advocacy resources were collected. The reason for choosing this topic is to highlight the importance of library professionals using advocacy to make their voices heard on issues that are important to them and to raise awareness about this issue. The research is in three parts. The first part of the study provides information based on the literature. In the second section, the survey data are presented in tables. Conclusions and recommendations are shared in the third part.
Method: The aim of this study is to investigate advocacy and advocacy skills in terms of information and document management based on the literature, and to reveal the advocacy skills, behaviors, and contributions of Turkish library professionals to advocacy activities by using a questionnaire as a data collection method.
Findings: In the study, a questionnaire consisting of nineteen questions was applied to Turkish librarians
working in different libraries. The survey data were analyzed with SPSS24, and the survey data are shared in the findings section.
Implications: The study found that Turkish librarians have a high level of awareness about advocacy, there is a need for training, leadership and motivation in advocacy, the need to support professional associations and the importance of using digital advocacy effectively.
Originality: What is new and unique about this topic is that Turkish library professionals’ advocacy skills,
behaviors and participation in advocacy work have not been studied before.

Kütüphanecilerde Savunuculuk: Türkiye’deki Kütüphanecilerin Savunuculuk Konusundaki Düşünceleri

Öz

Amaç: Bu çalışmada, Türkiye’deki profesyonel kütüphanecilerin savunuculuğa, savunuculuk becerilerine ve savunuculuk faaliyetlerine katılmadaki yaklaşımlarını tespit etmek amaçlanmıştır.
Yöntem: Araştırma kapsamında, farklı kütüphanelerde hizmet sunmakta olan Türkiye’deki kütüphane profesyonellerine on dokuz sorudan oluşan bir anket uygulanmıştır. Ardından anket verileri analiz edilmiş ve bulgular kısmında paylaşılmıştır.
Bulgular: Anket çalışması 780 profesyonel kütüphaneciye gönderilmiştir ve toplam 131 profesyonel kütüphaneciden olumlu dönüş sağlanmıştır. Anket sonucunda; profesyonel kütüphanecilerin büyük çoğunluğunun savunuculuğu çok önemli buldukları ortaya çıkmıştır. Ayrıca, anket katılımcılarının tamamına yakını iletişim becerisinin savunuculuk becerileri arasında birinci sırada olduğunu belirtmiştir. Kütüphane profesyonelleri, savunuculuk becerilerini geliştirmek adına motive edilmelerinin önemli olduğunu ifade etmişlerdir. Son beş yılda, savunuculuk faaliyetlerine katılım konusunda ise lisans, yüksek lisans veya doktora mezunu profesyonel kütüphanecilerin yarısından çoğu kütüphaneyi ve hizmetlerinin değerini anlatan programlarda yer aldıklarını belirtmişlerdir. Anket verilerine göre mevcut savunuculuk gereksinimleri arasında kütüphanecilerin kamusal, profesyonel imajının geliştirilmesi ve ulusal politikaların oluşturulması ilk sıralarda yer almıştır. Savunuculuğun önündeki en önemli engel büyük oranda farkındalık eksiliği olarak tespit edilmiştir. Araştırma anketinde, etkili bir savunuculuk stratejisi için yapılması gerekenler arasında büyük oranda kütüphane etkinlikleri, programları ve hizmetleri hakkında düzenli bilgi paylaşımının önemli olduğu ortaya çıkmıştır. Dijital savunuculuğun büyük oranda çok önemli olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Anket ile mesleki savunuculuğun önemli bir parçası olan meslek dernek üyeliklerinin istenen seviyede olmadığı gözlemlenmiştir.
Sonuç: Araştırma ile Türk profesyonel kütüphanecilerin savunuculuk konusunda farkındalık seviyesinin yüksek olduğu ortaya çıkmıştır. Ayrıca savunuculuk becerilerinin geliştirilmesine yönelik eğitime, lidere, motivasyona ihtiyaç duyulduğu tespit edilmiştir. Savunuculukta lider konumunda olan mesleki derneklere üyeliklerine ilişkin yeterli seviyede olunmadığı görülmüştür. Son olarak, dijital dünyada, dijital savunuculuğun etkin olarak kullanılmasının önemi ortaya çıkmıştır.
Özgünlük: Farklı kütüphane türlerinde hizmet sunan Türk profesyonel kütüphanecilerin savunuculuk becerilerinin, davranışlarının ve savunuculuk çalışmalarına katılımlarının daha önce araştırılmamış olması bu konunun yeni ve özgün olan kısmıdır.
