IRÈNE MÉLIKOFF’S LEGACY: SOME REMARKS ON METHODOLOGY

The French Turcologist, Prof. Dr. Irene Meelikoff, , who is one of the master scientists in the fi eld of Alevi and Bektashi tradition was deeply impressed by Mehmed Fuat Köprülü (1890-1966), who is the founder of Modern Turkish History and fi rst Turkish Scientist as Turcologist and Turkish Literature Historian. Melikofff, who has studied the Heterodox Turk- Islam roots and structure, has made a study of kam-ozan, Turk Shaman in the previous history of Islam, who is irenic, heals people, changes his shape into some animals and travel s into the world of spirits. Then she follows the traces of these Turk Shaman in the Alevi and Bektashi associations. We can see the refl ection of her connection with nationalist perspective in her conseptualizing Alevism and Bektashim, in her words “ Alevism is a kind of Bektashim,” and in in her assertion that is about the representation of “Alevi-Bektashi” tradition together.
