Sūfism, which is the essence of Islam, is a discipline that includes thoughts and practices for people
to recognize God. In this discipline, there are different ways according to the temperaments and
dispositions of people, one of which is Bektashism. In this ṣūfī-order, literature and art were used
extensively in the transfer of teachings, and poetry and music came to the fore among them. One of
the people who produced important works in this field at the beginning of the 20th century is Āşık
Sıdkī. Compositions on some of his poems have been influential in his recognition today. One of
them is the song known as Haydar Haydar and composed by Ali Ekber Çiçek in the late 1960s. The
lyrics of this work are taken from the devriye (a type of poem in ṣūfī literature) called Düş oldum
(I reached) by Āşık Sıdkī. This study focuses on the ṣūfistic interpretation and meanings of this
devriye, which begins with the line “Before the building of the earth and heaven framed”. Bektashi
understanding and practices have important common points with Alevism, which is a common
interpretation of Islam in Turkish society, in the fields of thought, poetry and music. Poetry and
music, with their concise and aesthetic expressions, provide a great opportunity to share ideas and to
spread culture. Haydar Haydar’s composition has gained a global reputation regardless of its lyrics,
but the messages about the evolution and unity of existence in the poem of Āşık Sıdkī, who chooses
the words he used with precision, are waiting to be read and understood. Via examining a lyrics of
a song, this study aims to develop a reflection on some concepts that have an important place in the
world of faith of the Turkish nation. It may also be an example especially for the interpretation of
similar works in the Alevi-Bektashi corpus.
