Interlingual Discourse Engineering: A Discourse-Transfer Model for Turkish-to-English (DTM-TR→EN)

Öz

This study proposes the Discourse‑Transfer Model (SAM‑TR→EN / DTM‑TR→EN), which treats spoken interpreting from Turkish into English not merely as a transfer of lexical equivalents but as a time‑pressured “multi‑modal discourse design.” The model integrates a Personalized Translation Modeling (KÖTM) approach to inventory speaker‑specific idiolectal units (forms of address, culturally loaded formulaic expressions, rhetorical chunks) during pre‑preparation; incorporates cognitive‑pragmatic processes within the framework of Gile’s Effort Model; and unifies multimodality or audiovisual alignment that captures simultaneity in prosody, tone, gesture, facial expression, rhetoric, and similar channels.Based on a manually coded idiolect inventory and multi‑mode analyses of simultaneous and consecutive interpreting examples, our findings indicate that simultaneous interpreting (SI) foregrounds macro‑propositional continuity and controlled condensation, whereas consecutive interpreting (CI) allows for coherence enhancement (insertion of connectives, thematization) and the explicit listing of evidential markers. SAM‑TR→EN (DTM‑TR→EN) extends traditional accuracy‑and‑fluency criteria with three discourse‑functional measures: speaker‑stance fidelity, idiolectal equivalence, and multimodal simultaneity. In this context, the proposed workflow — Preparation, Comprehension‑Selection, Discursive Re‑Construction, Delivery‑Monitoring — offers a teachable, applicable framework for both training (note‑focused CI progressing toward predictive SI; prosodic shadowing; idiolect lists) and assessment (speech‑mode fidelity, idiolect, multimodal alignment). Therefore, it is argued that the terminology lists produced by prior discourse‑transfer engineering on general tendencies and statistics usable for rendering a speaker’s output from Turkish into English will reduce interpreters’ cognitive load and provide access to data reusable in the same speaker’s future talks, thereby yielding sustainable and practical patterns.
