Purpose: Both pes planus and iliotibial band (ITB) tension, which can cause internal rotation of the tibia and foot pronation, can affect each other and lower extremity biomechanics. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between pes planus and İTB tension.
Methods: A total of 39 university students, 30 females and 9 males, aged 18-25 years (mean age: 21.44 ± 1.31 years) participated in this cross-sectional study. Pes planus assessment was performed using the Feiss line method. The ITB tension of the participants was evaluated by measuring the Ober inclination angle (OIA). According to the OIA results measured using an inclinometer device in the Ober Test position, the participants were divided into two groups as individuals with ITB tension (OIA below 24.59°) and individuals without ITB tension (OIA above 24.59°).
Results: Pes planus was detected in 18 (94.7%) and 13 (65%) participants with and without ITB tension. Most of them had grade 1 pes planus (23 right-74%, 20 left-64.5%) and the remaining (8 right-26%, 11 left-35.5%) had grade 2 pes planus. No correlation was found between pes planus and ITB tension. In contrast, there was a significant difference in the rate of pes planus between the groups with and without ITB tension (p=0.044).
Conclusion: The rate of pes planus was found to be higher in individuals with ITB tension. Moreover, this rate is significant when compared with individuals without ITB tension. Conversely, the relationship between the presence of pes planus and ITB tension was not significant.
