QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE EFFECTS OF KAOLIN, SILICA AND FRIT ON GLOOPY GLAZE COMPOSITION AT 1200°C

Öz

This study investigates the melting behavior and surface development of gloopy glazes formulated and fired at 1200°C through comparative observation within the context of formulation variables. Characterized by high silica (SiO2) and alumina (Al2O3) contents, gloopy glazes may produce thick, plastic and volumetric textures on ceramic surfaces by exhibiting limited flow during firing. The experimental design of this research is structured around three primary axes: kaolin type, silica source and frit type. In addition, the effects of additives such as MgO, talc, SiC, and Fe2O3 on melting behavior and surface character under identical firing conditions were tracked on a variable-by-variable basis. To increase comparability, each glaze composition was prepared according to standardized reference values; following firing, surfaces were assessed using visual records in terms of degree of melting, flow/runoff tendecy, pile-up profile and volumetric effect, surface integrity, bubble-crater formation, gloss/matte appearance and color tendencies. The findings indicate that gloopy glazes display a melting behavior that is sensitive to minor compositional differences and that surface toptgraphy and visual character are governed by multiple interactions that can not be reduced to a single parameter. Overall, this study proposes a practical, observation-based framework for reading gloopy glaze behavior through variable-oriented analysis.
