FAMILY AND IDENTITY IN DIGITAL NARRATIVES: A QUALITATIVE STUDY OF THE MADRIGAL FAMILY IN THE FILM ENCANTO

Öz

This study offers an in-depth examination of how family communication, role distribution, and individual identity construction are represented within digital narratives, focusing on the animated film Encanto: The Magical World (2021). Employing qualitative content analysis, the multi-generational structure of the Madrigal family, gender roles, and intergenerational conflicts are identified as central themes. The theoretical framework is grounded in Identity Theory, Carl Gustav Jung’s Archetype Theory, and Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey model. The film presents a narrative that overcomes the tension between traditional family values and the pursuit of individual freedom through empathy and dialogue. Notably, the grandmother figure emerges as a carrier of family values and a pivotal element in intergenerational transmission. As a product of the digital era, Encanto: Sihirli Dünya (2021), moves beyond superficial, idealized portrayals of family, depicting a multilayered and rich family portrait that reveals vulnerabilities, conflicts, and internal transformations. Within this context, the study demonstrates that animated cinema serves not only as entertainment but also as a significant medium through which family structures, social roles, and identity formations are culturally reproduced via narrative.
