ENVIRONMENTAL GRAPHIC DESIGN AND WAYFINDING SYSTEMS IN UNIVERSITY INTERIOR SPACES
Öz
This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of wayfinding systems at Yalova University Central Campus and to develop a user-centered Environmental Graphic Design (EGD) model integrated with institutional identity. The research was designed within a qualitative research framework to examine the effects of environmental graphic design on wayfinding and spatial communication in university interiors. Within the qualitative case study design, data were collected from eight academic staff selected through purposive sampling. Two focus group sessions were conducted with the same participants throughout the three-stage research process consisting of problem identification, design development, and design evaluation. The collected data were analyzed using content analysis, resulting in 97 codes and five main themes: visual coherence in design, spatial legibility, ease of wayfinding, institutional consistency, and user experience. The design process was structured according to the ADDIE model. Participants identified the lack of visual hierarchy and complex floor layouts as the main problems in the existing system. The design development process was grounded in Gestalt principles and interpreted through James J. Gibson’s ecological perception theory, as well as Stuart Hall’s reception theory. Within this framework, mapping systems, entrance panels, and pictogram designs were developed for the Yalova University Central Campus and presented to the administration as proposals. The model developed for the Faculty of Art and Design, selected as the pilot area, was implemented. The applied design includes information boards, mapping systems, directional signage, pictograms, and floor plans. The design aims to be user-friendly by incorporating typographic hierarchy, color coding, Gestalt principles, and ecological perception theory.
