WEB ACCESSIBILITY ON INTERNET NEWS SITES IN TÜRKİYE: AN EXAMINATION WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF TÜBİTAK KAMİS CRITERIA

Internet technology and websites are crucial in enabling individuals to access all kinds of information and news. While web accessibility aims to meet individuals' physical and cognitive needs, websites offer useful services in this regard. Based on this approach, the aim of this study is to analyze the compliance levels of Turkish internet news sites with TÜBİTAK Kamis's web accessibility criteria. Using content analysis, the study selected as a sample the top five sites ranked by Similarweb, a company providing information on web analysis and data mining, in the "News and Media Publishers" category between October 1, 2025 and December 31, 2025: hurriyet.com.tr, sozcu.com.tr, ensonhaber.com, mynet.com, and milliyet.com.tr. The websites were examined according to Kamis's web accessibility and usability criteria of A, AA, and AAA. The analysis revealed that internet news sites largely meet the KAMIS criteria at the basic level A classification, but their accessibility compliance rates are low at the AA and AAA classifications. The most prominent shortcomings are the sites' inability to adequately support sign language, provide expanded audio descriptions, and offer video content for hearing-impaired users. It is believed that improvements to AI-powered subtitles, sign language integration in pre-recorded videos, and the addition of buttons to text and images will help address these deficiencies.
