LIVING SPACES AFTER RESTORATION: INTERIOR ORGANIZATION AND CULTURAL SUSTAINABILITY IN ISTANBUL METROPOLITAN MUNICIPALITY (IMM) HERITAGE PROJECTS

Öz

Historic buildings are generally evaluated in terms of the restoration of materials and structures, while post-restoration interior organization often remains secondary. This study compares four IMM Heritage buildings: Casa Botter, Bulgur Palas, Artİstanbul Feshane, and Museum Gazhane to examine how interior spatial organization supports cultural sustainability. The multi-method comparative case study combines document analysis, spatial analysis, a seven-dimensional framework assessed using a Strong/Moderate/Limited scale, and NLP analysis of Google Maps reviews, with 2,892 reviews collected and 2,881 analyzed. The findings suggest that cultural sustainability does not depend on a single spatial formula but on building typology, circulation, and the relationship between original and new elements. In visitor discourse, Cultural Production Capacity and Program Continuity are the most visible dimensions, whereas Spatial Harmony and Spatial Adaptability are scarcely visible. The study proposes the Post-Restoration Living Space Evaluation Framework and identifies a discursive visibility gap between documented spatial-design logic and visitor discourse.
