THE GUIDING POWER OF VISUAL PERCEPTION AND MOTION IN THE DESIGN LANGUAGES OF DAVID CARSON, PAULA SCHER, AND SEYMOUR CHWAST

This study investigates the active role of the movement element, one of the fundamental building blocks in graphic design products, in visual perception. Vision is one of the core components of the human perceptual system and is a sensory process. Perception involves shaping sensory information within social and psychological contexts, enabling the individual to produce meaning that is unique to them. Visual perception is not merely a passive data recording; rather, it is actively constructed through social and cultural influences and encompasses a meaningful domain within the design discipline. For graphic design products tailored for a specific target audience, visual resonance with viewers, conscious and effective perception guidance, enhanced communication power of the design, and accurate conveyance of the intended message are of critical importance. Design is a multi-dimensional discipline centered on elements such as aesthetics, functionality, and user experience. One of the decisive factors in whether graphic design products are noticed by users and whether their attention is directed is movement. In this study, the guiding power of the movement element in graphic design is examined through the movement-focused works of pioneering designers David Carson, Paula Scher, and Seymour Chwast. The designs are analyzed using content analysis methods, and how each designer uniquely employs movement within their distinctive styles is evaluated. The analyses reveal that the movement element plays a critical role in contemporary graphic design practice in terms of aesthetic value and functionality, and it enriches the user experience.
