A MULTILAYERED ANALYSIS OF VISUAL SYMBOLS RELATED TO ISLAMIC CIVILIZATION IN PROVINCIAL MUNICIPALITY EMBLEMS IN TÜRKİYE
Öz
This study aims to systematically identify visual signs associated with Islamic civilization in the emblems of provincial municipalities in Türkiye and to examine their forms of visual representation. Adopting a qualitative research approach, the study encompasses the emblems of all 81 provincial municipalities in Türkiye. In the first stage, the visual signs in the emblems were examined through content analysis using the Multilayered Visual Sign Coding Ontology (MVSCO) developed for this study. In the second stage, 16 municipal emblems that met the specified inclusion and exclusion criteria were analysed using the representational and compositional meaning dimensions of Kress and van Leeuwen’s Grammar of Visual Design model. The content analysis identified 244 independent visual signs; 16 (6.56%) were classified as associated with Islamic civilization, while 228 (93.44%) were classified as unrelated. Of the associated signs, 11 were classified under Architectural Representation, three under Geometric and Ornamental Representation, and two under Celestial Representation. Mosque silhouettes, dome–minaret compositions, monumental portals, minarets, twin minarets, madrasa façades, eight-pointed stars, stylised geometric motifs, interlacing compositions, and crescents were the principal signs identified. The visual analysis showed that the signs were predominantly presented within conceptual-symbolic representational structures and that central positioning, symmetry, colour contrast, and framing were the principal compositional features. The study contributes by systematically identifying visual signs associated with Islamic civilization, making the transition to the second stage of analysis explicit, and proposing the MLDC as a methodological framework whose potential use can be tested across different visual datasets.
