THE ARTIST’S TOOLBOX: THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TOOL AND ARTWORK IN CERAMIC PRACTICE
Öz
This study discusses the role of the tool—often regarded as a technical detail in artistic production—in relation to material, the hand, and the artwork. An artwork is not limited to its final form but encompasses a multilayered structure involving the artist, production process, material, and tools of formation. In this context, the tool is not only an instrument that extends bodily capacity but also an active element that transforms modes of thinking and directs the production process. Adopting a qualitative and interpretive approach, the study examines selected ceramic artists and artworks through purposive sampling. The examples were selected for their capacity to reveal distinct modes of interaction among the tool, hand, material, and artwork. The relationship between the tool and the hand is considered as an integrated whole that develops through experience and gradually becomes an extension of the body, shaping the dialogue established with material. Accordingly, material is conceived not as a passive element but as a dynamic field of potential that is experienced and transformed through the tool. The selected works demonstrate that the tool can assume multiple roles: disrupting the material's mass integrity, following its flow, transforming structure through deconstruction, and generating rhythmic and layered surface textures through repetitive movements. By identifying these distinct modes of interaction, the study proposes a relational perspective in which the role of the tool is understood not as fixed or predetermined but as emerging through the specific interaction among hand, material, and artistic process. In this respect, the study contributes to discussions of ceramic practice by foregrounding the tool as a constitutive element that mediates the relationship between artist and material and participates in the formation of the artwork.
