AN EXAMINATION OF COMMUNICATION PREFERENCES OF FACTORY WORKERS DURING BREAK TIMES

Öz

In working life, break times are not only about physical rest but also about mental recovery, emotional relaxation, and social interaction or individual digital engagement. Especially in factory environments, tea breaks create a natural space that shapes employees' communication preferences. This research was conducted through semi-structured interviews with 14 employees with different demographic characteristics working in a production facility. The study aims to examine the communication styles adopted by factory workers during break times and how these communication processes are reflected in social interaction and communication styles within the workplace. In this context, the collected qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis method, and five main themes emerged as a result of the analysis: the function of breaks as a social interaction space, communication preferences changing according to break times, informal information sharing and strengthening of workplace communication networks, digital device use and individualization tendency, and the function of breaks as social bonding and emotional support. These findings reveal that tea breaks are not only a rest period but also a central element of communication and social relationships in factory culture.
