COLOR AND TEXTURE EFFECTS OF CALCITE, WOLLASTONITE AND DOLOMITE ON TRANSPARENT STONEWARE GLAZES
Öz
Glazes that provide aesthetic diversity on ceramic surfaces are not only visual elements but also functional components that determine the technical properties of the surface. The raw materials used in glaze compositions play a decisive role in the formation of surface characteristics such as color, gloss, mattness, transparency, and texture. Research on material knowledge and surface effects offers artists new possibilities for expression. In this study, the surface effects of calcite, dolomite, and wollastonite, used as calcium oxide (CaO) sources in ceramic glazes, were comparatively examined in transparent stoneware glazes. The study was conducted using an experimental research method; systematic glaze recipes were developed and tests were carried out within a triaxial glaze system. The resulting glaze surfaces exhibited various textural characteristics such as matte, semi-matte, crackled, transparent, satin-matte, and rough textures, which were found to vary depending on the type of raw material used. Glaze recipes that yielded successful results were colored with CuO, Fe₂O₃, CoO, Cr₂O₃, and MnO (3%) and were re-evaluated in personal applications; successful outcomes were obtained on both horizontal and vertical forms. The results demonstrate that different raw materials containing the same oxide produce distinct textural and color effects on glaze surfaces. This highlights the determining role of the chemical structure of the raw material in surface formation during glaze development processes.
