INTEGRATION OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND SUSTAINABLE TOURISM IN HBIM-ASSISTED RESTORATION OF HISTORIC STONE PLACES OF WORSHIP

Öz

Historic stone places of worship face a multidimensional conservation problem driven by material fragility, poor thermal performance, climate-change pressure and growing visitor loads. Historic Building Information Modelling (HBIM) provides a powerful digital backbone for their documentation, diagnosis and management, yet the energy-efficiency and sustainable-tourism dimensions remain only partially integrated into this backbone. This study pursues two complementary aims: to map the scientific literature at the intersection of HBIM, energy efficiency and sustainable tourism, and to propose a five-layer integrated conceptual framework specific to historic stone places of worship. From an initial pool of 247 records retrieved through a four-block Web of Science query, a multi-stage screening process combining document-type, language and topical-relevance filters yielded, after case- and hyphenation-harmonisation of the keyword fields, a final corpus of 108 research articles (2007–2026), analysed in Bibliometrix (R). The field expanded rapidly after 2020; production concentrates around an Italian, Chinese and Spanish core, with very limited international co-authorship. The harmonised co-occurrence network organises the field along four axes — cultural-heritage–reality-capture, BIM–HBIM–energy–life-cycle, heritage–conservation–sustainability and tourism–sustainable-development — in which energy-adjacent concepts have begun to co-occur with BIM/HBIM at the keyword level, while sustainable tourism anchors its own separate cluster and thus stands as the field's primary integration gap. Tourism is not marginal: in dual-use ritual/tourist environments visitor management is inseparable from material and energy dynamics. On this broader evidence base, the proposed framework integrates digital documentation, structural–material diagnosis, energy performance, visitor experience and digital-twin governance around a single parametric HBIM model, making sustainable-tourism integration the principal near-term priority.
