Wheelchair Basketball Players’ Experiences with Microaggressions in the Sports Environment

The purpose of this study is to examine the experiences of microaggressions encountered by wheelchair basketball players in a sports setting and the meanings they ascribe to these experiences. The study employed Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), one of the qualitative research approaches. The study group consisted of six male wheelchair basketball players active in a sports club for people with physical disabilities. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed in accordance with IPA. The analysis revealed three main themes: “Transformation and Recognition Through Sports,” “Discriminatory Encounters,” and “Institutional Invisibility and Resistance.” The findings indicate that wheelchair basketball strengthened the participants’ social participation, self-confidence, and athletic identity; however, they also revealed that the athletes faced microaggressions such as pity, low expectations, questioning of their capabilities, condescending remarks, and exclusion. Furthermore, it was determined that recognition as an athlete is often linked to success and performance, while at the institutional level, participants experience insufficient support, visibility issues, and bureaucratic hurdles. It has been observed that participants developed various coping strategies in response to these experiences through performance, discipline, solidarity, and advocating for their rights. Consequently, it is believed that awareness-raising efforts aimed at reducing disability-based microaggressions in sports settings should be increased, and that the institutional support provided to athletes should be structured in a consistent, professional, and rights-based manner.

Tekerlekli Sandalye Basketbol Oyuncularının Spor Ortamında Mikroagresyon Deneyimleri

Öz

Bu araştırmanın amacı, tekerlekli sandalye basketbol oyuncularının spor ortamında karşılaştıkları mikroagresyon deneyimlerini ve bu deneyimlere yükledikleri anlamları incelemektir. Araştırmada nitel araştırma yaklaşımlarından Yorumlayıcı Fenomenolojik Analiz (YFA) kullanılmıştır. Çalışma grubunu, bir bedensel engelliler spor kulübünde faaliyet gösteren altı erkek tekerlekli sandalye basketbol oyuncusu oluşturmuştur. Veriler yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler aracılığıyla toplanmış ve YFA doğrultusunda analiz edilmiştir. Analiz sonucunda “Sporla Dönüşüm ve Tanınma”, “Ayrımcı Karşılaşmalar” ve “Kurumsal Görünmezlik ve Direnç” olmak üzere üç ana tema ortaya çıkmıştır. Bulgular, tekerlekli sandalye basketbolunun katılımcıların sosyal yaşama katılımını, özgüvenini ve sporcu kimliğini güçlendirdiğini; bununla birlikte sporcuların acıma, düşük beklenti, yapabilirliğin sorgulanması, küçümseyici söylemler ve dışlanma gibi mikroagresyonlarla karşılaştıklarını göstermiştir. Ayrıca sporcu olarak tanınmanın çoğu zaman başarı ve performansla ilişkili olduğu, kurumsal düzeyde ise yetersiz destek, görünürlük sorunları ve bürokratik güçlüklerin deneyimlendiği belirlenmiştir. Katılımcıların bu deneyimler karşısında performans, disiplin, dayanışma ve hak arama yoluyla çeşitli baş etme biçimleri geliştirdikleri görülmüştür. Sonuç olarak spor ortamında engellilik temelli mikroagresyonların azaltılmasına yönelik farkındalık çalışmalarının artırılması ve sporculara sunulan kurumsal desteğin sürekli, profesyonel ve hak temelli biçimde yapılandırılması gerektiği düşünülmektedir.
