A meta-analytic examination of sustainable tourist behavior within the value–belief–norm framework
Öz
This study integrates a systematic literature review with a meta-analytic synthesis based on the Value–Belief–Norm (VBN) framework to better understand sustainable tourist behavior. It brings together empirical findings on psychological determinants that shape pro-environmental actions in tourism settings. A total of 12 studies published between 2010 and 2025 (k = 12), representing over 5,000 participants, were included in the analysis. Using a random-effects meta-analytic model, 22 effect sizes were synthesized to assess the interrelationships among values, environmental beliefs, awareness of consequences, attribution of responsibility, personal norms, and pro-environmental behaviors. Because some structural relationships were examined in only one included study, these findings should be interpreted with caution and may have limited generalizability. Overall, the evidence indicates positive associations within the framework. Relatively strong associations were observed for several cognitive-moral relationships, particularly those involving awareness of consequences, responsibility attribution, and personal norms. Personal norms are associated with higher levels of pro-environmental behavior, though their influence varies across behavioral domains. Conceptual inconsistencies in the treatment of egoistic values and differences in operationalizing altruistic and biospheric values reveal heterogeneity across studies. The findings suggest that future research should employ larger samples, more standardized measurement instruments, and clearer distinctions among value dimensions.
