Öz

ECMO is a cardiopulmonary support procedure which is applied to infants with respiratory failure Blood taken from right atrium is collected in a reservior by means of gravity and than pumped to a gas exchange unit and returned to right main carotid artery The infant who will be applied ECMO should weigh more than 2000 grams and be grater than 34 weeks of gestation; should not have any systemic or intracranial hemorrhage congenital heart defects irreversible lung disease and the predicted risk of mortality should be 80 or more Veno arterial route is frequently used but veno venous route may also be used nbsp; Some of important complications of ECMO procedure are intracranial hemprrhage hemolysis hyperbilirubinemia thromboembolic events thrombocytopenia disseminated intravascular coagulation cholestasis renal failure and neurologic deficits The overall mortality rate is reported to be 17 by the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization ECMO saves 80 of the infants whose predicted risk of mortality is 80 but unfortunately it is not used in Turkey yet Key words: nbsp;ECMO Neonatal
