Abstract

Diabetic ketoasidosis DKA is one of the acute metabolic complications of diabetes In spite of significant recent advances in insulin dependent diabetes mellitus IDDM the incidence of DKA is not declining Successful treatment of the patient with DKA requires knowledge of its pathophysiology It is clear that one of the most important factors in the management of patients with DKA is the frequent monitoring of the patient s condition Hydration electrolyte replacement and insulin administration in physiological doses are the backbone of therapy Cerebral oedema is the most common cause of death in children with DKA The rapid infusion of large volumes of hypotonic solutions is the possible cause of cerebral oedema Key words: nbsp;Diabetes Ketoacidosis Fluid Therapy
