The aim of this
study is to investigate metaphor studies in Mathematics and Science fields in
Turkey between 2005-2017 and to identify the trends of the researchers related
to the subject and to evaluate descriptive information (study field,
publication year, the subject of metaphor, purpose of metaphor use, etc.)
related to these studies. For this purpose, a total of 79 studies including 69
articles and 10 dissertations were accessed in their full texts using National
Higher Education Council National Thesis Center, ULAKBİM and Google Academic
databases, and these studies were examined. Content analysis was used in the
study, and obtained data were presented in frequency and percentages. The
findings show that the number of studies conducted in Mathematics and Science
is approximately equal, the studies are predominantly conducted in 2016, and
that metaphors including concepts related to "mathematics",
"teacher" and "science" are examined. In addition, it has
been observed that studies using phenomenology design, qualitative approach,
and content analysis were predominant, and studies mainly focused on teacher
candidates or middle school students. One of the common conclusions of the
studies examined is that metaphors are an effective tool in perception, that
there are generally positive perceptions of the topics where metaphors are
examined, and that new studies on metaphors are needed. Based on the results
obtained, it is recommended to carry out studies to determine the perceptions
related to scientific concepts in Mathematics and Science subjects in
particular.
