Objectives: Meningococcal infection is a serious disease ranging from asymptomatic carrier to occult bacteremia and rapidly progress to meningococcemia. The aim of this study was to evaluate the approach and the knowledge level of pediatrician and pediatric resident in meningo-coccal vaccines.
Methods: A total of 104 physicians across Turkey were included in the study. Questionnaire was used in our cross-sectional study. Age, the status of residency and specialization, working times, epidemiological questions related to meningococcal infection; meningococcal sero-types, infective serotypes, vaccine types, boosters, treat-ment and eradication were recorded.
Results: It was seen that 54 (51.9%) of pediatrician and resident followed up meningococcal disease but, 50 (48.1%) doctors had no experience. There was no statisti-cal distinction between the following up meningococcal disease and the duration of pediatrician (p=0.655); that of residency duration was significant statistically (p=0.029). The relationship between the answer given to the most common sequalae question and the duration of residency was significant (p=0.028). There was no statistical signif-icance in the answers given about the serotype of menin-gococcal vaccines according to the duration of the special-ist and assistant physicians (p=0.131 and p=0.534, re-spectively).
Conclusion: It is very important for pediatricians to update their meningococcal disease and vaccination in-formation for the fight against the disease. Such survey studies are very useful in terms of attracting the attention of physicians about meningococcal infection, completing their deficiencies and strengthening their awareness.
