FREEZING THE PAST, CONSTRUCTING THE FUTURE: THE HETEROCHRONIC FACE OF MUSEUM TEMPORALITY

Yıl 2025, Sayı: 3, 167 - 176, 28.03.2025

Öz

Museums are generally perceived as institutions that preserve and exhibit historical pasts. Taking as its starting point the concept of heterotopia formulated by French philosopher Michel Foucault and the principle of heterochrony he identifies as one of the defining characteristics of heterotopias, this article initially highlights the past-oriented structure of museological temporality dominant in modern museums. Subsequently, it interrogates how museums, as heterochronic heterotopias, might encompass temporality in all its dimensions. By opening museum temporality to critical examination, this paper aims to contribute to critical museum theory.
