Broadcasting After Terror Incidents and Auto - Control: A Research on the Attidudes of Television Reporters in Ankara
Abstract
After terror has become global threat, it has become it is possible to happen anytime anywhere with different types and scale, and causes loss of life and property. The incidents happening after terror attack are learned via television channels, and at this point thematic news
channels play significant role on ensuring information needs of people. Terror incident occurred is stated as breaking news on television channels. Then, news presenter gives the first information about the news flash. After a while, the latest news supplied by press agents and live connection from the area is conveyed to the audience. However, there are critics about the fact that those news creates public fear and panic. Based on this fact, Radio and Television Supreme Council may carry out broadcasting ban. In this research, it is tried to be figured out that if news channel members in Ankara are agree with the idea that broadcasting after terror incident creates fear and panic or not.Besides, weather occupational reflex and rivalry give an opportunity to ensure a self-controlled broadcasting or not, and their attitudes towards the RTUK’s broadcasting ban are tried to be comprehended.
In this research, terror, the relation between media and terror, broadcasting at extraordinary times are the primarily mentioned topics. As a sample in the research reporters, cameramen editors news managers working at Ankara offices of those Thematic news channels TRT HABER, CNN TURK, 24 TV, HABERTURK TV, A HABER and TGRT HABER were taken. Within the quantitative research method, a poll, prepared in Five Point Likert Scale and consisting of separate questions, was applied to those media members. And the data was analyzed in SPSS. In the research, it was concluded that media members think differently about the fact that if broadcasting after terror incidents causes public fear and panic. Moreover, findings about the fact that if occupational reflex and rivalry ensures self-controlled broadcasting were reached. Both the percentages of the ones who support RTUK’s broadcasting ban, and the ones who oppose to it, were concluded that they are close to each other.
