Öz

The main purpose of this study is to review awareness at local level about climate change as a global issue. This study evaluates ideas about the effects of socio-economic differences on individual and social awareness about climate change, faith in policies for struggling against climate change and actors which play a role in local policies. The study sample is Gebze (Kocaeli), an industrial settlement area developing under the effect of the Metropolitan Area of İstanbul. One of the important industrial centers of Turkey, Gebze embodies industrial-urban uses which increase C emissions and have a negative contribution to climate change on one hand and a population which is possibly affected by the results of climate change on the other. Ideas of climate change awareness were collected through face to face interviews in this study. The conclusions obtained from Gebze sample are expected to define the perspective of the society about climate change policies and awareness about climate change and to contribute to the process of creating policies for struggling against climate change at local level
