Worldview Education in A (Post-)Secular Age

This study reconsiders the role of religion in the public sphere and the position of worldview education in the context of a post-secular era. It emphasizes that religion cannot be entirely excluded from public life; rather, it occupies a central place in individual and collective quests for meaning. Drawing on the contributions of contemporary thinkers such as Habermas, Taylor, De Vries, and Joas, the article argues that religions and worldviews serve not only individual development but also contribute significantly to the shaping of social life and democratic participation. In particular, Charles Taylor’s tripartite definition of secularity offers insight into the extent to which individuals’ faith trajectories have become detached from institutional frameworks. The article asserts that worldview education should be integrally connected to citizenship education, emphasizing that such integration can support students in constructing their personal identities. In this regard, the current dual structure of the Dutch education system -dividing public and denominational schools- is critically examined. The need for a more inclusive, pluralistic, and formation-oriented educational approach is highlighted. Promising developments are also noted, including the implementation of pluralism-based educational models in some Islamic schools, the emergence of collaborative school models, and the renewed attention to the concept of personal formation in education policy debates. These developments underscore the importance of an education that goes beyond cognitive achievement alone, supporting students’ meaning-making and identity development through pluralistic and inclusive frameworks. Encouraging personal growth grounded in worldviews should be seen not merely as an individual right but as a pedagogical responsibility that contributes to the common good in democratic societies. Education systems must foster dialogue and mutual understanding among individuals from diverse religious and value-based backgrounds, thereby playing a vital role in achieving social cohesion within contemporary multicultural societies.

Çalışmada, sekülerlik-sonrası çağda dinin kamusal alandaki rolü ile dünya görüşü eğitiminin konumunu yeniden düşünmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Dinin kamusal alandan tamamen dışlanamayacağını, aksine bireysel ve toplumsal anlam arayışlarında önemli bir yer tuttuğunu vurgulanır. Habermas, Taylor, De Vries ve Joas gibi düşünürlerin katkılarıyla, dinin ve dünya görüşlerinin yalnızca bireysel değil, aynı zamanda toplumsal yaşam için de anlam taşıdığı savunulur. Özellikle Taylor’ın sekülerlik kavramına getirdiği üçlü ayrım, bireylerin kendi inanç yollarını oluştururken kurumsal yapılardan ne ölçüde uzaklaştığını anlamamıza yardımcı olur. Makalede, dünya görüşü eğitiminin vatandaşlık eğitimi ile bütünleştirilmesi gerektiği, bu sayede öğrencilerin kişisel kimliklerini oluşturmalarına destek olunabileceği ifade edilir. Hollanda’daki eğitim sisteminde yaşanan ikili yapı (kamusal ve mezhepsel okullar) eleştirilerek, daha kapsayıcı, çoğulcu ve formasyona dayalı bir eğitim yaklaşımının gerekliliği vurgulanır. Son olarak, umut veren gelişmeler olarak bazı İslami okulların çoğulculuğa dayalı eğitim modelleri, “işbirlikçi okullar” ve kişisel formasyon kavramının tekrar gündeme gelmesi örnek gösterilir. Çalışma, çağdaş idealizm olarak nitelediği yaklaşımıyla, çocukların dünya görüşüne dayalı kişisel gelişimlerinin desteklenmesini ve bunun kamusal faydaya hizmet etmesini hedefleyen bir eğitim vizyonu ortaya koyar.
